Photograph by David A. Lee
The monsoon moved northwestward from the Gulf of California, bringing rain all over Southern California, including Palm Springs, an event that doesn't happen all that often in July.
The photo above is by Palm Springs photographer David A. Lee. This is a winter rain, which is far more common than the summer rain we had today.

aggravation!
Bike riding is supposed to be relaxing, but today's ride was annoying. I decided to go with my camera to take pictures for this blog.
The first image I attempted to take was of this homeless woman I see often on my route from Dumuth Park to Indian Canyons and back.
The woman is about 40 with bleach-blonde hair, not too bad looking, but definitely on the rough side of life.
I just wanted to take a picture of her shopping cart, which had an interesting sign posted to it, so I stopped and got ready to take the picture when she walked up.
I asked her if I could take her picture with the shopping cart and she yelled, "No! If you do I'll call the law!"
"Call the law!" I thought. What an odd way of putting it. It sounded like on old Western movie.
So I rode on, wasting the precious beautiful moments of peace and scenery thinking about it. She had always been friendly to me on previous rides. Oh well...she had probably forgotten about it several moments after I had passed.
I rode on...right into a "Road Closed" sign going to the entrance of Indian Canyons. "Sh..!" I thought. Two miles my bike ride is cut off. The most scenic part of it.
That got me thinking about land ownership. In this valley the tribes own a lot of the land. They have the right to do what they want with it...and they do.
They will fine $1000 dollars if you go off the road onto their land. I'm not quite sure how that works, though, as I've crossed the line several times to take pictures, only to be spoken to by a tribal ranger. Never got the fine.
I figure that since I live in an area with lots of rich people and finicky tribes, the places I go will be limited and the things I do, restricted.
Sometimes I hit the pictures just right, and other times all wrong.

Doris Day

Doris Day at the Desert Inn in Palm Springs. Photo from acertaincinema.com |
Just like the rest of the big stars, Doris Day also came to Palm Springs. She was the Julia Roberts of the 1950s and 60s. In a 2008 New York Times article Kay Ballard had said that she has visited Doris from time to time and that she still looks like Doris Day and referred to her as somewhat reclusive.
Doris lives in Carmel Valley California. She was born in 1922 or 1924 depending upon who you ask. That makes her somewhere in her late 80s. At any rate, she'll be 90 soon.

Missing the Cool Days of Spring
Just two months ago there was water in the desert. The days were warm--under 100 degrees the nights cool.
Now we face long 110 degree days and 80 degree nights. How long is this going to last?

Robert Doisneau's 1960 Palm Springs Visit
Iconic photographer Robert Doisneau visited Palm Springs in 1960 to photograph for Fortune magazine. It was Doisneau's first experience taking color photographs.
Doisneau questioned his visit, thinking Palm Springs was nothing but golf. "All I know is that you have to hit a small, white ball on green turf into a hole which is hardly big enough to receive it," he notably remarked.
More about this fascinating history here.

Sidewalk
Palm Springs, the whole Coachella Valley, really, has to be one of the most manicured place in the world.

What a remarkable woman. Before her fame as first lady, she was a dancer.
Ford lived in Rancho Mirage, about 5 miles east of Palm Springs.
