Wrong Chimp

This is not the chimp that died today. This chimp is Cheeta, once thought to have been the star of the Tarzan moves. I discovered that this chimp was not the real "Cheetah"in the Desert Sun today. The chimp that died today at 80 lived in Florida. Yes, the wool was pulled over my eyes and the eyes of many others who thought this chimp was a film star.

Cheeta Dead at 80

Sad week here in Palm Springs. First Carol Channing's husband dies and then Cheeta, former Palm Springs resident and star of the first Tarzan movies. Not to worry, The big chimp has a grandson, who I believe still lives in Palm Springs.

Bikini During the Day; (Fake) Fur at Night

Can you guess why no one is lounging around. If you guessed that it's too cold you were right. Palm Springs can have some downright frigid nights. That's where the expression in the title came from.

Poolside at Night

Every year in December the boutique hotels against the big mountain in Palm Springs have open houses. This is one of the hotels. I haven't a clue which one it is. Anyone know?

Ruby's in HDR

Gee, you thought I had brought a tripod into this restaurant to get this sharp of a picture and in HDR, no less. I didn't. I took it while the camera was sitting on the table.

Warm Sands HDR

Palm Springs has a wide selection of vintage autos. All you have to do is take a long walk through the neighborhoods and you'll see many.

Slab City Vehicle

Drive by Slab City and this is what you'll see, something you won't see in Palm Springs Life magazine.

Slab City is 55 miles southeast of Indio, near Niland, CA.

El Prado Pool

Anyone ever here of El Prado Pool? Grabbed this from an old tourism video and tweaked it in Photoshop.

Town and Country Center in HDR

Here's the Town and Country Center in Palm Springs (the old Zelda's), a building in major disrepair. Should it be torn down? I advocated for a "no" answer in a post back in 2007, but now I have second thoughts.

The building was designed by an African American architect, Paul R. Williams in what designers call international style.

Here's the latest on its status: On June 17, 2011 the city of Palm Springs issued a news release that stated, in part, that “Wessman Development has agreed to remove the Town and Country Center from the Desert Fashion Plaza Revitalization Plan.”

Here's the big question:

Shoud the Town and Contry Plaza be Torn Down?
Yes
No
I don't know

Palm Springs Airport Outdoor Roof

These types of canvas cover for sun protection are popular here. The white surface doesn't absorb so much heat so it stays fairly cool outside under one of these.

Margarita's in HDR

Many people go Happy Hour Hopping in Palm Springs because their are abundant restaurants with incredible prices.

Who knows if those prices will stick when the season begins next month.

Margarita's restaurant at 1000 E Tahquitz Canyon Way in Palm Springs is a great place for Happy Hour.

Three or four people can get out of there full from snacks and a bit buzzed from Margaritas for about $20-$30.

About the Photography: This works well in HDR (a type of photo-editing process) because the restaurant has so many objects in it. Make sure you click on the image to see the full effect.

HDR Condo Swimming Pool

HDR doesn't work very well if you don't have much detail in all parts of the frame. At any rate, here's my second HDR photo on Palm Springs Daily Photo.

Marilyn at the Racquet Club

Cruising the Internet I found a great photo of Marilyn at the Racquet Club in Palm Springs. So what's happening with the Racquet Club. It's been through many changes. This is how the Racquet Club Palm Springs is today.

Toy Ferris Wheel

You'd think that not many people shop in Palm Springs. They're too busy lounging around the pool.

Antique and gift shops along and around Palm Canyon have some interesting and fun toys.

In order to get this shot I put my lens against the window so that the camera would remain steady, resulting in some cool motion blur as the ferris wheel was turning.

As I was photographing it, the shopkeeper got kind of nervous, staring at what I was doing. I left before he could say anything.

No harm done. Anyone know the shop selling this?

Elvis House in Palm Springs

Elvis house in Palm Springs. Almost every tour of Palm Springs will take you there. If you want to go there yourself, it's at 845 W Chino Canyon Rd. Elvis actually owned this house, buying it in 1970. It's not his Honeymoon Hideway, which he rented in the late 1960s.

Rolling a Bowling Ball down Palm Canyon in Summer

There's an old saying about Palm Springs in the summer. It's "you can roll a bowling ball down Palm Canyon and it wouldn't hit anything." That's partially true, but it's not like the old days where no one came to Palm Springs off-season. Today they're coming in on the weekends in droves. The economy is so bad, the LA people only get as far as Palm Springs when they're traveling.

Modern chair from the store "Room Service," which used to be located in Palm Springs. There's a bicycle rental place there now.

Dinah Shore

The only thing I can remember about Dinah Shore is that she had a talk show in the 1970s.

She had several shows, actually. I think the one I remember was "Dinah!"

She also sang this:
See the USA in your Chevrolet
America is asking you to call
Drive your Chevrolet through the USA
America’s the greatest land of all.

She had a house in Palm Springs. It's really cool. Visit here.

Leon's Bar and Grill Closing

The fabulous restaurant and gathering places in Indian Canyons is being handed over to the Agua Caliente tribe.

Speculate about what the tribes are planning to do with it by commenting.

Jack Benny House

If you're under 50, you probably don't know who Jack Benny was.

The most memorable Jack Benny trait is that he was eternally 39. Benny lived close to where he worked--a two minute walk to the studio where he broadcasted his radio show from the El Mirador Hotel.
