Cicadas. This is my fourth summer in the desert and it's the first time I've seen them. They're one of those insects whose nymphs stay underground for some number of years before they all emerge and do their noisy thing. The number of years they stay underground varies with difference species.
They remind me of Locusts, but I'm not sure what yours is either.
