Chimney Ranch

Chimney Ranch is out in Thousand Palms near Palm Springs. I haven't got a clue as to what the history of this place is. Anyone know?

  1. Hello, the property is the last of the homesteads (apart from the smaller building to the right) built in that area around the 1950's, the rest having being acquired and dismantled by the Nature Conservancy who run the visitor center below.
The property is still originally owned, maintained and regularly visited by a family from Santa Barbara who were friends of Paul Wilhelm, one of the first non native area inhabitants who lived where the visitor center is now. As a friend of theirs I've spent many wonderful vacations here, it's a gem.
Out of respect for their privacy I'll leave it at that. The owners do appreciate the respect of their privacy by the trail walkers!

  3. I should add that the name Chimney Ranch is due to the fact that that building was the first (only perhaps?) of the homesteads to have a brick chimney. Another interesting note is a troop of scouts makes regular visits to the location.

I remember being there on a Boy Scout campout over 40 years ago. Didn't know they were still there. I understand the ranch was also originally called "Powell's Toilet Ranch" as they had the first flush toilet in the area.
