Humility and Humanity

This photo says a lot, a lot about life and a lot about life in Palm Springs.

We've got a confluence of population here--old meets young.

Come out here on the weekend and you'll find family members of four generations.

Yes, the "last great generation" has to be careful here, as the heat is severe. The woman in the picture has gotten sick. This scenero happens a lot here.

There are four types of tourists here.

1. Weekenders looking for a get-away from LA and San Diego.

These people come here in droves when fog has socked in the coast. San Diego and LA have an effect called the June Gloom, a period during late fall and early summer, when there is fog along the coast that doesn't dissapate till sometimes well after noon.

2. Travelers from Europe

Palm Springs is identified as a Hollywood getaway for stars then (during the 50s) and now.

3. Gay people

There are more than a dozen exclusive gay resorts here, which attracts gay people--white, black, latino and all the rest.

4. Military

There's a base at 29 Palms, about an hour north and east of here. Many affiliated with the base come to Palm Springs for entertainment.

I posted this image to get your attention. Did it work?

  1. Hi from San Diego. Yes, you got my attention. The heat is pretty intense in your city. I'll have to make a weekend trip there some day. :)

  2. Yes, it worked. I don't remember any of these people there in 1952 but I was only there a short time and the place was very nice and expensive.

I didn't do much today but...

I did write about how people used to wear long underwear over winter or until we began to stink. You can find the link at the bottom of the post today.

  4. You forgot another tourist type. The one's who go to Palm Springs to visit their sons or daughters who are stationed at 29 Palms. That's when I visted. I thought I was drinking alot of water because I knew to drink more than when in PA but I even got to the point where I felt like I was going to pass out. There was a kind lady in a shop that gave me some water.

  5. You're right about 29 Palms being a place of entertainment for those associated with the base. We're the closest city to it. I added it : )
